Cedar Fences
Cedar Fence Styles We Build in Vancouver
Western Red Cedar resists rot on its own and takes stain well. A fence that lasts on the North Shore uses cedar boards and rails on cedar or pressure-treated posts, with galvanized or stainless fasteners so nothing streaks black in the rain.
Horizontal Cedar Fences
A clean, modern line for newer homes. Horizontal runs need closer posts and dry boards so they do not sag. Gapped for airflow or tight for privacy.
Board-on-Board Fences
Overlapping vertical boards on both sides of the rails: no gaps as the wood shrinks, finished from both yards. The heaviest style, so posts and footings are sized for it.
Privacy Fences and Screens
Solid vertical boards with a top cap, plus lattice or slats if you want light above eye level. Usually built to the maximum height your municipality allows, so read the rules below.
Gates That Keep Working
Gates get used daily and sag first. A gate that keeps working is braced diagonally, hung from a deeper-set post, and fitted with a latch that still lines up after the first winter.
Built for Wet Ground
Posts and Footings That Survive North Shore Winters
Most fences here fail at the post. Rain, clay soil and shade keep its base wet, and a wet post rots at the ground line while the cedar above it is still fine.
So the effort belongs below grade. Posts should sit on gravel so water drains away from the end grain, in a concrete footing crowned to shed water. Where the ground is rock, common in Lynn Valley, we can drill and set steel post bases instead. On slopes the fence steps down in level panels or follows the grade.
Staining and Finishing
Cedar lasts without a finish, but a penetrating oil stain keeps the colour. New cedar must dry first, so staining is a return visit once the wood has weathered in, or a simple plan you can follow yourself.

What Affects a Fence Build

Length and height. More feet means more posts; taller fences need bigger posts and closer spacing for wind.

Ground, slope and access. Clay, roots, rock, old footings, a hillside or a side yard with no gate all add time.

Removing the old fence. Pulling old posts and concrete is real work, and the debris has to go somewhere.
- 4
Gates, caps and stain. Each gate is its own small build. Caps, top rail and stain are line items so you can choose.

Property lines and neighbours. A shared fence goes best when both sides agree on the line, height and finished face first.

Before You Build
Fence Height Rules in North Vancouver
North Vancouver is two municipalities with two sets of fence rules, quoted here from the municipal documents. Vancouver, West Vancouver and Burnaby each have their own.
District of North Vancouver
The District's Fence Height Regulations sheet says "placement of same must be on, or within, the property lines." For regular lots it shows a 6 ft. high maximum on the street side, measured 25 ft. from the front property line back along the side property line, and an 8 ft. high maximum beyond that and across the rear. On a retaining wall, "the total height must remain within the prescribed regulation as well; ie, Retaining wall is 4', then 2' fence is permitted."

Zoning Bylaw 1995, No. 6700, section 412, as quoted in the City's handout: a fence "when not exceeding 1.22 metres (4 feet) in Height may be sited on any portion of the Lot"; "when not exceeding 1.829 metres (6 feet) in Height may be sited to the rear of the front face of a Principal Building on the Lot"; anything taller "shall be sited in accordance with the required distances from Lot lines for Principal Buildings." On corner lots the 15' sight triangle is "restricted to 3' in height to ensure visibility."

It depends on your municipality and the design. Both North Vancouver municipalities regulate fence height and placement, and we check the rules for your address before we quote.
District of North Vancouver, regular lot: 6 feet for the first 25 feet back from the front property line, 8 feet behind that. City of North Vancouver: 4 feet anywhere on the lot, 6 feet behind the front face of the house. Corner lots and other municipalities have their own rules.
